How to get chosen for the Wand Experience at Ollivanders

How to get chosen for the Wand Experience at Ollivanders

Here’s how to get chosen for the Wand Experience at Ollivanders Wand Shop in Universal Studios Florida. Please note that there’s also an Ollivanders in Hogsmeade, but we recommend the wand shop in Diagon Alley for the most authentic experience!

What makes us experts on how to get chosen for the wand experience at Ollivanders? Well, my kids have been chosen multiple times! My oldest was chosen on the first time he ever tried (on his 11th birthday, how fitting), and we wanted to share our best tips for how to get picked at Ollivanders Wand Shop.

Before we get started, let me introduce myself. My name is Amy, and I’m a Universal Travel Agent, a travel blogger, a Florida resident, and a long-time Universal Annual Passholder.

I have firsthand experience with the parks, hotels, rides, dining options, and more, enabling me to offer tailored recommendations and insider tips to enhance your Universal vacation. Contact me for more information if you’d like assistance booking your Universal vacation at no cost to you.

One more tip before we get to why to book a Universal vacation with a Universal Orlando Travel Agent: Having a car can be handy during your Universal vacation. I recommend renting a car from Discount USA Car Rental. They have the best prices, and you don’t have to pay until you pick it up!

How to get picked for the Wand Experience at Ollivanders

There are a few simple but effective tips for how to get picked for the wand experience at Ollivanders. Here they are, in no particular order.

These are tips for getting chosen, but don’t worry, there are no spoilers for the experience itself!

1. Be a kid

Sorry, adults, children are usually chosen for the wand experience at Ollivanders Wand Shop. Bonus points if you look close to 11 years old. If you’re an adult hoping to be chosen, I recommend trying to visit the parks during the school year when there may be fewer kids present. However, if you’re a child close to 11 years old, you have a huge advantage!

2. Dress up in your best Harry Potter Gear

My daughter was chosen when she was completely decked in Slytherin Gear (robe, headband, clothes, etc.), but my son simply wore Harry Potter glasses and a Harry Potter lanyard. One of the best ways to get chosen is to wear your best Harry Potter gear, whether you’re representing your house or just wearing a fun Harry Potter-themed t-shirt. Check out some of our favorite Harry Potter gear on Amazon.

3. Look excited!

One of the best ways to increase your chances of being picked for the wand ceremony at Ollivanders Wand Shop is to look excited! The wand makers will choose those who look like they will enjoy this magical experience.

4. Get into line early

Tips 4 and 5 for getting chosen for the wand experience at Ollivanders run together, but the first step is getting into line early. If you’re first in line, you will have an easier time getting to the front of the show. As a bonus, you’ll have a better few even if you are not chosen.

You can use Express Passes for the line! You can check the pricing for the Express Pass Signature Resorts: Hard Rock Hotel, Loews Portofino Bay, and Loews Royal Pacific.

5. Stand in the front

Since you are getting into line early, it will be easier to stand in the front. The wand maker will see you (especially if you’re a kid who might get lost in the back), which will increase your chances of being chosen.

Are the wands free at Ollivanders if you’re chosen?

No, the wands are not free, and you’re under no obligation to purchase one even if you’re chosen for the wand experience. If you already have a wand or don’t wish to purchase one, you can simply give it back in the shop after you leave the ceremony.

If you’re not picked for the wand experience, you can always try again, or simply pick out a wand in the shop after leaving the experience.

Pro tip: Ollivanders can get very crowded. There’s a smaller stall – Wands by Gregorivtch – outside that sells the same wands and generally has no wait time.

How much do Ollivanders’ Wands Cost?

As of the writing of this post, the interactive wands cost about $65. There are other wands that cost more, but generally speaking, you’ll pay about $65.
