The Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando
If you’re planning a Universal Orlando vacation, you may be asking: What is the best time to visit Universal Orlando? The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The best time depends on the priorities of your family, whether that’s smaller crowds, cooler weather, or visiting during one of Universal’s special events.
In this post, we’ll explore crowd levels, weather, and even how to plan around events like Halloween Horror Nights or Christmas at Universal.
Before we get started, let me introduce myself. My name is Amy, and I’m a Universal Travel Agent, a travel blogger, a Florida resident, and a long-time Universal Annual Passholder.
As both a Universal Travel Agent and a mom who’s visited the parks more times than I can count, I’m here to help you plan your visit to Universal! Contact me for more information if you’d like assistance in booking your Universal vacation at no cost to you.

The best times to visit Universal Orlando
Universal Orlando crowds and weather shift a lot throughout the year, and timing your trip right can make all the difference. Here’s a quick look at what to expect in each season:
Winter (January–February):
This is one of my favorite times to visit. You’ll find lower crowds, mild weather, and shorter wait times. The downside? Some rides may be closed for maintenance. All water rides go through refurbishment during the winter months.
Spring (March–May):
Beautiful weather (usually) and Mardi Gras celebrations make this a popular time. It’s also spring break season, so expect more crowds throughout March and into early April.
Summer (June–August):
Hot, humid, busy, rainy, but it’s also when the parks are open the longest. If your kids are out of school, summer is still a great time to go with the right plan (and plenty of water and sunscreen!). I highly recommend staying in a Signature Hotel that includes Express Passes during this time.
Fall (September–November):
Crowds drop off after Labor Day, making early fall one of the best times to visit. September and October bring Halloween Horror Nights, which is great for adults and teens. This is NOT a family-friendly event for those with kids under the age of 13.
Holiday Season (mid-November–December):
One of the most magical times of year! Universal goes all out for the holidays with Grinchmas, beautiful decorations, and the Universal Holiday Parade. Expect higher crowds but also amazing experiences that aren’t available during the rest of the year.

When are there fewer crowds at Universal Orlando?
If you want to enjoy Universal Orlando with minimal wait times, aim for these times:
- Mid-January to early February
- September, after Labor Day
- Early November and early December (before school breaks)
These times can be great for smaller crowds and often better hotel prices. Just keep in mind that Universal often schedules refurbishments during slower months, so check attraction closures before you go.
When Is the Weather Best in Orlando?
Florida’s weather can be unpredictable, but generally:
- Best overall months: Winter (November-March), although you’ll find some chilly days and some hot days mixed in.
- Hottest months: June–September
- Coolest months: January–February
- Rainy months: June-September
If you’re visiting during summer, plan for early park mornings and afternoon breaks to beat the heat. I always recommend bringing ponchos. It rains nearly every day in the summer. It’s often quick, but also a downpour!

Do you need a rental car in Orlando?
The short answer is maybe! If you like to get around on vacation and are flying into Orlando, I recommend renting a car. I recommend Discount USA Car Rental. Discount USA Car Rental offers the best rates, whether flying into Orlando or Sanford airports.
Special Events at Universal Orlando
Universal hosts several seasonal events that can make your trip even more exciting (or busier, depending on your goals!).
- Mardi Gras (Spring): Family-friendly parades, concerts, and some of the best food offerings available.
- Halloween Horror Nights (Fall): The biggest Halloween event in Florida.
- Holidays at Universal (Winter): Grinchmas, Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and a parade.
- Rock the Universe (Early Year): Florida’s largest Christian music festival.
If you love special events, plan your trip around them, but be aware that there will be extra crowds, especially on weekends.

The Best Time to Visit for Your Family Type
Everyone’s “best time” looks a little different. Here’s how to decide:
- Families with Young Kids: January–May or early November–December. Cooler weather, fewer crowds, and less overstimulation.
- Teens & Thrill Seekers: Summer or fall (for Halloween Horror Nights). Longer hours, high-energy atmosphere.
- Budget Travelers: Value season — mid-January, late August, or early December.
- Harry Potter Fans: Avoid peak holidays for shorter waits in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Trip (Any Time of Year)
No matter when you visit, these tips will help you have the best Universal vacation possible:
- Take advantage of Early Park Admission (available to guests staying at Universal hotels or booking through a travel agent).
- Consider Universal Express Pass if you’re visiting during busy times.
- Get to the park before opening for shorter lines in the morning.
- Take midday breaks, especially in the summer! Head back to the hotel pool or grab a long lunch.
- Book with a travel agent (like me!) to save time and stress, maybe a little money too!
So, When Is the Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando?
When is the best time to visit Universal Orlando? It depends! If you want low crowds and cooler weather, January – February is a great option. If you want the lowest crowds, September is one of the best months, although it can be very hot.
If you want to experience events or longer park hours, spring or the holidays might be a better fit. While we’re at the parks at least once a month, my favorite times to visit are early September (very slow), early December (great weather, before the holiday crowds), and February (Mardi Gras and great weather, before spring break crowds).
Whenever you decide to go, Universal Orlando is always an amazing experience. And if you’d like help figuring out the perfect time for your family, contact me for assistance with your vacation.

The Best Time to Visit Universal Orlando FAQ
When is the absolute best time to visit Universal Orlando?
For low crowds and mild weather, visit mid-January through early February or after Labor Day in September for the lowest crowds but still hot weather.
Is there a bad time to visit Universal Orlando?
There’s no truly bad time, but mid-summer (June–August) can be very hot and crowded. If you do go then, plan for early mornings, midday breaks, and use Express Passes and/or Early Park Admission.
How many days do you need at Universal Orlando?
At least 3 days, and you’ll want Park-to-Park tickets to ride the Hogwarts Express. With the addition of Epic Universe, I’d recommend 4 days, but 3 is an absolute minimum to explore the 3 parks. Add at least one more day if you plan to visit Volcano Bay.
What’s the cheapest month to visit Universal Orlando?
Typically, January, early February, late August, and early September offer the best prices on tickets and hotels. However, Universal is always creating new promotions, so reach out to your Travel Agent (me!) to help you find the best value at any time of the year.
Should I visit Universal or Disney first?
There’s no wrong answer if you’re planning a split Disney/Universal vacation, but many families start with Disney and end with Universal. If you’re a thrill ride lover, you might prefer to do Universal first while you have the most energy!

We love Disney and are annual passholders here too! Check out our Disney blog posts for more.
